There have been some sizeable swings in the stock market lately, both day-to-day and even during single trading sessions. But then around noon ET, the S & P 500 topped out and reversed lower. "Put simply: The S & P Oscillator is our most trusted indicator of how to act during big upswings or huge downdrafts in the market. You don't want to be sitting at your computer, staring at your screen when the major stock market benchmarks are getting knocked all around the place. And, if the flipside is true in an over-bought market, having the courage to trim when emotionally you're thinking let that baby run.

"In our mind, these debt-funded bitcoin purchases add froth to the current crypto rally by raising the risk of severe deleveraging in a potential downturn in the future," he added. MicroStrategy raised $604 million from the sale of converts on March 18, and another $800 million on March 8 . The latest purchases mark an acceleration from the fourth quarter pace, when MicroStrategy bought more than $1 billion of bitcoin. Originally launched as an enterprise business software company, Microstrategy has been buying bitcoin and holding them on its balance sheet since 2020. It largely trades as a proxy for the price of bitcoin, and in February of this year leaned into that, rebranding itself a Bitcoin development company.

The logo for Goldman Sachs is seen on the trading floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, New York, U.S., November 17, 2021. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 16 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs on Monday said it expects industrial metals markets to remain vulnerable to incremental softness in the near term due to deteriorating demand and the impact from higher interest rates. "Building and construction activity remains the weakest segment, but there were downdrafts now noted in volume appetite from most other sectors, with the exception of aerospace," analysts at Goldman Sachs said. The copper market could face near-term pressure from the likelihood that Chinese imports of the metal could be restrained, the bank said. Three-month nickel on the London Metal Exchange was trading around $18,710 per metric ton by 1425 GMT on Monday.

Bitcoin's back to its volatile ways after its big move down late last week — but not for the reason investors expected. Aside from the mismanaged crypto lenders (and FTX) that plagued the crypto market in 2022, the Federal Reserve's inflation-fighting rate hiking campaign played a big part in bitcoin's downward price pressure. "The volatility will have a persistence if we're going to stay here at an elevated real rate environment," he told CNBC. Even if the Fed doesn't raise interest rates anymore, the crypto space seems more focused now on real rates and keeping them elevated to fight inflation. Having institutions with an established long core holding would act as a stabilizing force for Bitcoin, Connors added.

CNBC's Jim Cramer opined Tuesday about the value of sticking with his "Magnificent Seven," the seven tech stocks currently leading the market: Apple , Amazon , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla . "It's so aggravating to stand here and tell you to just stick with the 'Magnificent Seven' and friends," Cramer said, adding it's easier to talk about stocks when you're sure the price targets are going higher instead of lower. "It's just so darned easy to bet on the 'Magnificent Seven,' because everything always seems to go right with them," Cramer said. For example, Cramer said, one of Nvidia's models, FourCastNet, can predict high-impact weather models weeks in advance and is 45,000 times faster than current models. "Now, I know that Nvidia's weather forecasting doesn't result in higher earnings per share, at least not anytime soon," Cramer said.

However, I'm a bit confused about when to buy if the S & P 500 Short Range Oscillator shows the market is overbought. In an overbought market, we begin looking for areas to raise cash because sellers are likely to enter the market in the near term in order to book profits. Or, at the very least, an overbought market means the risk-reward profile has deteriorated and we may be in for a period of consolidation. Every time we mention the Oscillator — Jim's most trusted guide for what to do during big upswings or downdrafts in the stock market — we're flooded with requests from Club members: "How can we access the Oscillator?" More surprising was that Yglesias seemingly hadn't looked up what basis points are. "A 'basis point' is just a percentage point. It has the exact same meaning and takes up the same number of words and I have no idea why finance guys like to say 'basis point' instead. Sometimes they shorten it to 'bips' because too many people have gotten wise to the basis points," read a footnote in the original post. A basis point is not a percentage point.
But the Janus Henderson Investors' Balanced Fund has been able to shield itself from at least part of the year's volatility by reducing exposure to equities and leaning more on fixed income. Fixed income accounted for about 44%. "This year has been tricky, obviously, because there's been such a high correlation between fixed income and equity returns," he said. Within fixed income, Buckley said the fund has been more conservative by reducing exposure to corporate credit. Despite the challenges of 2022, Buckley is optimistic about 2023.
"We had a big crash and I immediately started seeing water enter the plane. Passengers started to struggle to rescue themselves," Samuel said, describing the moments after the Precision Air flight to Bukoba plunged into the lake in northern Tanzania. In the hours and days after the accident, reports of survival and dramatic rescue efforts have started to emerge. Jackson dived into the water and managed to communicate with the pilots by signalling through the window, he told the BBC. By the time rescue workers reached the pilots, their air supply had run out and the pair were dead, authorities said.
Chip Companies in for a Brisk Fall

Coming earnings reports from such companies as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing are unlikely to turn around the current negative sentiment for the semiconductor industry. The semiconductor industry is well accustomed to downdrafts. The third-quarter earnings season for the chip industry is shaping up to be a harsh one. Chip makers Samsung and Advanced Micro Devices already preannounced disappointing results for the quarter late last week. On top of that all, the U.S. government is cracking down even harder on semiconductor technology sold to Chinese companies, with new rules announced Friday that expand on previous export controls.

But what do you do when the market has no memory from one day to the next? We receive a daily update from the S & P: Anything above a plus 4% would indicate the market is overbought; anything below a minus 5% would indicate the market is oversold. The market was making new highs that day and in subsequent days, but the S & P Oscillator was flashing an overbought signal. Tornado facts: How they form and what to look for

Scott Cunningham/Getty Images“Sometimes, it may appear that a storm is in a perfect environment for a tornado to form, yet it never does. The updrafts and downdrafts work in tandem to pull the horizontal column of air down to form the tornado. “The most telltale sign that a tornado could be forming, when you are looking at a close-range severe thunderstorm, is the ‘wall cloud,’” says Miller. The wall cloud is a lowering of the cloud base that will lead to the vortex, or spinning of air. The presence of a wall cloud doesn’t always mean a tornado will form, but it certainly ups the odds.
